you all for coming to Ashclyst on what looked
like a very wet day at 7.30 am when we arrived!
The weather was very kind and dried up at just
the right time. I
was very grateful to the Scouts for helping at
Registration, the Start and collecting the
controls. They are an asset to the club and
hope that they were not put off by helping. I
did not book a toilet because I was worried about
getting it up the lane to Assembly and by
potential misuse by the public. In the
event I think I made the correct decision as the
wind was very strong on the Saturday and I doubt
whether a toilet would have remained upright and
useable.

Comments
My thanks to Nick for the
planning. Very few problems arose in the
checking of the sites. The vegetation has
changed considerably since the map was drawn and,
at this time of year, undergrowth is a problem in
what are mapped as runnable areas. Some 'major'
paths are blocked by holly and fallen trees.
Conversely some of the 'light green' has now
progressed to being fairly 'go-able' - possibly
these aspects of the map should be updated
soon.

Planner’s Comments
After the torrential rain of
the Ashclyst event last March, I thought July
would be a safe bet when agreeing to plan again.
Wrong !! The going underfoot was good until
a few days before the event, but turned to a slow
squelch. Although times for the top finishers
were on target, and course lengths for Brown
& Blue at least were at the low end of the
guidelines, a number of competitors found the
combination of mud and undergrowth to be tough
going and were out on their courses for a long
time. The more technical courses were planned to
go off-path where possible but the large areas of
fight meant this was possible on limited legs
only. Thanks go to controller Roger Hateley for
help in finalising the courses and to Roger &
Susan for control checking and collecting. Also
thanks to Roger Green for printing maps, raising
pictorial descriptions and bagging.
