Organisers Comments.
This it just a note to say thank you to the Devon Orienteering Club members who didnt file my email request to help under spam, but volunteered to come along and help put on Devons Gallopen event. Their enthusiasm to lend a hand was appreciated by myself and by all the runners on the day.
Speaking of runners - What a great turn-out! I saw a good variety - a newcomer who took her parents round the string then the yellow course.
The orienteer who hadnt run for about 3 years, and decided to try out the new-fangled technology. It was also good to see many of the Gallopen stars showing how it should be done.
Found Property - 1 black eXtremities beanie hat. Please phone me on 01626 859365 to let me know where I should send it to. Ill keep it for 6 months, then find a good home for it.
Cheers,
Eleanor
Planners Comments
January on BullersHill means clag , i.e. perfect conditions for Orienteering. Good luck for the rest of 2007.
I would like to thank Controller Rosie for her help and advice. We had very similar views on coureses and worked well together. Indeed, the final Light-Green owed more to her than me, as she persuaded me to make it more technical than I had originally envisaged, and this was well received on the day. Erik Pecketts advice and help was also very sound and useful. We also received a great deal of support from Ian Lynch of Forest Enterprise, and his rangers, especially Gemma, who was always willing to help over the weekend.
As for the planning: We were restricted to the West, due to the establishment of a deer sanctuary, (although no one seems to have told the deer and the rut was deafening at times while planning. In fact much of my optimum routes were following deer track that I encountered): and also to the south , as there was a threat of felling in Deadmans Coombe, although this hadnt commenced by 7th Jan. My approach was pretty standard, I wanted to make use the physical nature of the area but encourage fast running as much as possible. When I offered a longer path route, I tried to allow room for a lack of concentration to be punished at the attack point. I always like to hit the competitor across the face with a wet fish as soon as they pick up their map and see their course. I was greatly encouraged by the imagination in route choice. All my wildest ideas were attempted and a few I hadnt envisaged. I was pleased with my Orange and Yellow courses. Here I was wanting to introduce greater diversity of terrain, trying to maintain a spirit of adventure and discovery (something that I always missed on becoming more proficient myself). I have not planned and mapped a string course before and must recommend it to other planners. You see the world from a refreshingly new perspective.
Thank You
Wilf Taylor
Controllers Comments
Hopefully most competitors "enjoyed" their trip into the woods at Bullers Hill.
Thankfully the worst of the weather held off until the majority of the runners had completed their courses. I think the finishing times indicate that course lengths were about right. I had been concerned that distances seemed a little short - but competitors comments seemed to show that the physical nature of the terrain was quite testing enough! Wilf worked hard to make good use of the terrain and had a clear idea of what he wanted to achieve. The whole event seemed to go well with the use of the buildings and the short distance to start/finish area helping the Devon team keep the whole event deceptively simple to operate. A big thank you to all concerned.
