Controllers
Comments.
This is the
first time, as a controller, that I have had to
consider the safety of the competitors as my main
priority. The overnight rain was far more
than I had appreciated even though I was camping
in a small tent at Princetown. To give an
example of the scale of the problem : When
I was checking the tagging of the control sites
Roger Green and I investigated and decided on a
river crossing for the Blue and Brown courses.
At that time I crossed the river with dry feet.
When I checked that crossing on Sunday morning
the water came above my knees at less than a foot
from the bank. The other river crossing
needed only a quick glance!!!
We were
fortunate that the courses could be rearranged to
give fairly good courses, although they were not
as good as the originals especially at the end.
My apologies to the Light Green competitors
there was no other way in which we could
have given you a reasonable course. The
diversion round the aqueduct made your course
much longer than the usual Light Green course but
at least you still had the technical challenge to
keep you amused.
The various
people organising any competition make the
decisions they make knowing that certain facts
cannot and should not be ignored. I was,
therefore, amazed to hear that one particular
individual took a particularly stupid risk to
cross the river at a totally unsuitable spot.
I find this sort of behaviour completely
inexplicable especially in the light of the
recent tragedy in this years Ten Tors
expedition. If that individual never comes
to a Devon event again I shall not be
disappointed! Yes, I know that a couple of
other people also crossed the river but , at
least, they chose a reasonable spot to do so.
I would like
to express my thanks to all those who helped at a
rather damp, cold and miserable Norsworthy Bridge.
My thanks go especially to Lew Bean for his help
with the maps which meant that he did not have
enough time for the Blue course he would normally
have run and also to John Hurrel who ran to
the north end of the woods and back , in double
quick time, to give us a report on the state of
the river there.
May you
always run in sunlit forests.

Organiser's
Comments
Not much to
add except to thank everybody who came for coming.
We were all rather busy to talk much to various
helpers we even had car park attendants,
who would have been busy had we had more people
coming. It was nice to see a lot of youngsters,
obviously made of sterner stuff.
John Hurrell
was learning the trade as an
Organiser. I cant say it was a
baptism of fire for him. It was more
a case of in at the deep end. John
did a lot of running around and standing about in
the cold next to flooded rivers but he is an M35.
Thats what these young people are for!
