Devon League - Five Tors 4 Nov 06 - Results
Planner's comments:
Most of Five Tors is very open and runnable, and the features are very shallow. It is therefore difficult to find control sites where runners visiting the control are not visible from a large distance. I therefore included a lot of height climb and tried to use the more technical areas of the map for the harder courses. The W side of Cox Tor seemed to work well. The upper sections of the other tors were less satisfactory, as the rock features on these tors are hard to represent unambiguously. I also set a long leg on the Blue course to give some variety. This did not work so well, as the low level path route was too obvious a route choice. The Light Green was intentionally above guideline length, to compensate for the ease of the area and because I did not feel I should take this course into the rocky sections.
I would like to thank Alan for useful comments and discussions, (otherwise the Light Green might have been even longer!). I would like to thank El and Wilf for putting out controls the day before, and Anthony, Ella, Robyn and Jon who helped collect controls afterwards. I would also like to thank Roger for the maps, including having to reenter a lot of the data into the computer because of a Picover bug.

Controller’s Comments
In the run up to the event, Mike Cullen and I had a friendly dialogue about course lengths. He wanted to give you a good run for your money, particularly on the light green. Of course, being a meteorologist he had the weather sorted, and what a day we enjoyed!
The greatest challenge was for the yellow course, where judicious upgrading of the map improved the representation of the available paths, and produced an acceptable but rather monotonous course. But the youngsters seemed to enjoy it.
Five Tors is a super area in the sense of open running, largely free of bracken and no gorse. Mike was determined also to utilise the technically and physically tough section on the west side of Cox Tor, as well as the summits of the other tors. I hope the club will organise some update of the map before our next visit.

Organiser's Comments
Well Done Devon for another good event. I was very impressed by the positive response to my email spam requesting volunteers to help and again by the enthusiasm and work on the day.
There was a total of 114 runners on all courses. A good handful of those were people who completed one course, then did another. This says something about the courses - and the weather! It was refreshing to see so many juniors coming along and giving it a go - a special 'Well Done' to you.
There was some Lost Property - 1 and a half pairs of gloves. These are with Alan Simpson, who is the Organiser of the next event - on Whitchurch Common on Dec 10th. He will bring them there. Feel free to contact eleanor.taylor@metoffice.gov.uk if these are your gloves and you're not planning to go to Whitchurch.
See you at Whitchurch. Next event I'm organising will be on Buller's hill on Sunday 7th Jan…….can't promise to bring the weather again!
