Organiser’s Report

Thanks to everybody for coming to Haldon yesterday. It was good to see some sunshine at last!

The rain in previous weeks had encouraged vegetation growth – so courses that looked short and quick at Registration turned out to be a bit of a veg-fest in practice! However it was nice for rookie planner Matt Atkins that competitors were complimentary about his courses.

A number of newcomers turned up to the event. I hope that you enjoyed it and will come again.

I am grateful for the help of Devon club members – all of whom know what they are doing and just get on with the job in hand. Thank you all. And thanks too to controller Mike Cullen who ensured the event was fair and enjoyable for everyone.

The Haldon forest rangers were very supportive. What a busy forest on a bright Sunday morning! Our prior concerns about competitors being mown down by mountain bikers proved thankfully to be unfounded. We did however have a worry about a little girl overdue on the White course, and club members (including the Torquay lads) swung into action to look for her. Fortunately she turned up safe and sound.

    Planner's Report
Phew! This was my first time planning & I seem to have survived it without any major mishaps. I thoroughly enjoyed creating the courses, although I am not so sure all the competitors enjoyed running them! Haldon is a very physically challenging area & I was keen to provide technically challenging courses as well. I appreciate is was a tough day for some people, but at least you got your moneys worth!

I would like to thank John & Carol Pearce. John for acting as my mentor, whose advice & encouragement was greatly appreciated. And Carol who did a very efficient job as Organiser & also offered me a great deal of support. John also took the time to update the map which helped to increase my options.

I would further like to thank Mike Cullen who, as Controller, was very patient and gave me all the assistance I needed.

Lastly, thanks to Wilf & Eleanor Taylor for helping to put out some of the controls & for staying on to collect them in again. Also, Tim Gent for helping with control collection.

    Controller’s Report
With the benefit of some reasonable weather I think all enjoyed their day on Haldon. Matt's first set of courses as a planner was greatly appreciated, even the very tired finishers on the Brown course said it was good value for money and exactly what a Brown course should be, no paths in sight and a mixture of very long legs and short technical legs. The junior courses also worked well, the hardest job for a new planner to get right. Carol was an excellent organiser, in particular remembering that we should advertise the course closure time. John Pearce did a very good job of revising the map and opening up some new possible sites.

As well as thanking all who helped, I would like to give special thanks to those who turned out to help look for a lost 6 year old on the White course. Fortunately she had a good homing instinct and was found safely. The fact that we had a number of people on hand with experience of these situations was very useful.
