Comments I had thought that
a Saturday event would attract fewer competitors.
As it turned out, a good number attended for
this first league event of 2008/9 and all
appeared to like what was on offer;
appropriately challenging and enjoyable courses -which
is what it is all about. Particular thanks must
therefore go to Damian Wilson, for his
substantial role in planning the courses.
The conditions first thing
in the morning were quite misty, with visibility
at about 30 metres at times, but soon improved.
Thanks to all of the helpers for their
contribution, all of whom also got a run, if
they wanted one: Andy Reynolds, Lew Bean,
Mathew Atkins, Ian Bowles, Ruth Smith, Tom
Lillicrap, Nick Maxwell and Peter Flick. Thanks
also to Ella Bowles and Simon Beck for collecting
in controls. I hope I have not missed anyone.
Additional thanks go to Roger Green for not only
controlling the event but also printing and
bagging maps and producing control descriptions.
It was pleasing to note that
a number of people were returning to the sport in
Devon, either as a result of a period of absence,
or moving to the area. We hope to see you again,
as well as regular participants.

Thank you for coming to King
Tor. It was never going to be an event at which
your feet remained totally dry, but the rain the
previous weekend saw to it that the dry parts
were also covered in lots of water as well.
Fortunately on the day the rain cleared up, so
most of you got most of your run in mostly dry
weather - things were much easier when the cloud
base lifted and you could see where you were
going. King Tor has many, many features, and a
good map, so it is relatively easy to plan on.
Without bracken, and without me routing you
through too many of the permanently damp parts,
it is also very fast, as you found out. I hope
you enjoyed your tour of the area, I particularly
like the tor and the large-scale mine features to
the south, with the imposing black ruined wall of
an old building looming at you through the mist.
Or perhaps you were running too fast to
appreciate it. Looking at the split times, I see
the most awkward control for many was the first
on the green (on the far side of a boulder). I
can guess you didn't run far enough before
looking back. I can appreciate this after it took
me around 10 minutes to place the last control in
the morning, the mist really making it very
difficult to judge distances. Fortunately, there
were enough objects to take bearings off to be
sure of its location. I trust you had fun, and
you can try Dartmoor again at the next Devon OC
event.
And finally, thank you
to Roger for looking over the courses and
printing the maps, and to Simon, Bryan, Ella and
Ella's dog for helping bring in the controls. We
were all heading back home by 3 pm! This was very
welcome help.
