It was a game of two halves.
Those who started early had a tolerable but windy
run. Those who started late had the lot
wind and rain. We had some bad
weather courses ready but did not use them as it
didnt look too bad at 8.00 am. Shame
about the toilets blowing over but by that time
just about everybody had been!Whilst we didnt have a
dedicated SI rep during the day, Steve helped out
entering runners and downloading finishers and
Alan Simpson sorted out some problems at the end
of the day, so thanks to them. Thanks also to
Peter Flick and his 4WD for manning the
Checkpoint for about 5 hours and running many
errands before and after the event.
I hope those
of you competing in the QO event and the OMM do
well and that you have better weather than that
which Dartmoor threw at you today!!

After controlling
Jill Greens courses in 2007, I thought that
it would be difficult for me to keep the standard
high. But with Nigels influence on the
courses and Rogers guidance and mapping
expertise on the OCAD front it was fairly easy.
The map left a lot
to be desired, despite the fact that there are
quite a few features on the ground. Initially the
map appeared blank with only the Tors, rivers and
major features mapped. I made some amendments to
give clarity to some features, and Roger added
some other features at my request. I am sure you
all discovered features that werent on the
map!
Using the fact that
a lot of you would be competing in the QO event
on Sunday in (possible) preparation for the OMM
later in the year, I made the control sites on
large geographical features, which didnt
require too much fine navigation.
The military roads
around the area assisted with getting around, so
putting out controls was a lot easier than usual.
What we didnt expect was the strength of
the wind on Saturday. If the rain had been
heavier we would have had to make the courses
shorter. We had a contingency plan if the East
Okement River became uncrossable, but at least
there were two bridges that would be OK even in
the worst weather.
Well done to all of
you that completed your courses, given the
conditions you all did very well. There were some
good times on the Long and Medium. I think that
the earlier starters got the advantage of some
better weather though.
I would like to
thank Nigel for collecting controls and Roger for
organising the event.

Congratulations to
Steve & Roger on putting on another excellent
Long-O and well done to all who took part,
especially the later runners who felt the brunt
of the weather
