Comments The road
round the east end of Burrator Lake was a busy
place with runners, cyclists and walkers. The
orienteering event also attracted a nice mix of
old and new faces on a lovely day with a faint
promise of Spring.
In order to try and get cars
off the road, I had a secured the re-opening of
the Arboretum car park after closure due to the
winter snows. Some orienteers took one look and
said they werent going in there.
Actually the surface is firmer than it looked,
and I dont think anybody needed a push out
at the end.
Steve Rose had planned
technically demanding courses using the areas
potential to the full. Unfortunately the
quirkiness of the OCAD software caused confusion
over scales, and everybody got a bumper run
all courses were 50% longer than planned
whoops we are all unpaid volunteers
after all.
My thanks go to Mark Bagley
and Jamie Hayward on the start, Kate Bickerstaffe
and Jill Green on registration, Roger Green
manning the computer almost single-handed, and
Rob and Jamie Parkinson for offering to collect
controls.
As to event advertising, the
club website is the prime organ of communication.
The forward fixture list runs to about 12 months
ahead for spotting future events. And it is
always prudent to check the day before the event
for late changes. On this particular occasion,
the only thing which changed was information
about toilets. Unfortunately the toilets at
Burrator dam appear to be permanently closed, but
there are public toilets at Burrator Lodge
closer to our event. These are not signed from
the road, but their existence was noted on the
event flyer final version. As a general
principle, the club uses public toilets for a
local event if they are available, rather than
forking out £80 for a portable unit.
