What a day. This is the
second Devon event in succession where an event
has been drastically affected by the heavens
opening. When we were putting out the final
controls at just before 10am, the level of the
Plym was more than a foot below the riverside
footpath between controls 38 and 39. As soon as
we became aware of the problem about 90 minutes
later Dave Livsey volunteered to stand near 38
and direct runners up onto the cycle path, whilst
Andy and I checked out the rest of the riverbank.
We hope it didn't detract too much from your day.
Several competitors thought
that control 39 would no longer be accessible,
and didn't go down to it from the cycle track.
They therefore showed up as mp on their splits
printout. We have decided to reinstate them, but
add on 5 minutes to their time.
Despite the weather, I hope
that you all enjoyed the challenge of the West
bank of the Plym. I thought that it was worth
visiting the area to get away from the frequently
used Cann Woods side. I trust you also noticed
the rich industrial archaeologyof the area as you
slid about in the mud!
My thanks to Ella and Ian
Bowles, Alison and Andy Reynolds, and Alan
Simpson for helping me get the 32 controls in by
dusk; to Dave Livesey for directing runners; and
to you all for braving the weather and supporting
the event.

It
was good to revisit the dramatic rock and quarry
features of the west bank of the river. Our
thanks go to Bombardier Transportation for their
very willing help in lending us the use of their
car park. A donation of £35 is going to
Children in Need.
My thanks to
the very efficient team of helpers. Controls were
collected and everything wrapped up by 16.00.
Dave Livsey and Ann Hughes gave help to newcomers.
This was intended to be a special Come and
Try it event, but, to be honest, we were
not overwhelmed by new faces.
The weather
certainly dominated proceedings, and the wet
slippery ground led to fairly long running times.
But you returned exhilarated, particularly those
wet from the waist down! We were more fortunate
than KERNO who had to cancel the Mt Edgecumbe
event the following day, on account of predicted
gale force winds.

Well done everyone for
turning out on such a day. Just competing
in such conditions shows that you are made of
sterner stuff than most people, or were you just
so desperate to avoid Christmas shopping?
Competitors seemed to enjoy themselves, which
makes it all worthwhile for the organising team.
Lews courses
were testing, but within the guidelines. It
was the conditions and the enforced extra climb
up from the riverbank that obviously added to the
times.
We were taken by
surprise by the rapid rise in the river level.
I suspected that the path would become wetter, so
had already decided to inspect it. However,
I hadnt expected the river level to rise so
much, so fast. The fact that it was so
obviously impassable, and from a point where a
detour could be made, was perhaps lucky for us as
no one was tempted to try to pass once it got too
bad. The river was certainly impressive to
look at, and there were new rivers spouting from
all directions!
From a controllers
point of view it was a lesson for the future to
expect the unexpected!
Thanks to Lew for
planning, Alan for organising, and as well as the
others, a thanks to Mike Steward for the coldest
job of the day (car parking), and for helping me
to re-direct competitors down at the river.
