Planner's Comments

Planning an event at Princetown in December presents a number of challenges!  Fortunately we were able to use the Primary School car park and outbuildings, so at least we did not have to worry about parking in a muddy field or the registration tent being blown away.  However, the open moor south of Princetown in winter is not the most welcoming venue for an orienteering event.  So I must thank all those that turned up and battled through the tussock grass, particularly near the start and finish.  As always, planning the short courses was the most difficult.  However, as many of our younger members were up in Yorkshire competing for the Yvette Baker trophy (and doing us proud, well done all the runners and their supporters!), the turn out for these courses was low.  The area further south of South Hessary and Hart Tor is more interesting and runnable, so my philosophy was to take those of you on the intermediate and longer courses to the south of the map.  The added complication of this area is that low cloud can make navigation a real challenge due to the lack of distinctive features when the more distant tors and major valleys cannot be seen.  This was the reason I mostly opted for prominent control locations.  Those of you that ran early faced poor visibility and were at a significant disadvantage compared to the later runners.  C’est la vie, I hear you say!   Despite that, I hope you all enjoyed the run.

Thanks to the controller, Nicholas Maxwell, and organiser, Hana Skucková, for their support in the smooth running of the event. And thanks to the willing control collectors, who helped us wrap up the event well before darkness fell.
