Planners Comments
Planning at Virtuous Lady proved more difficult than I first thought. On my first outing to check control sites I couldnt find some and others I felt couldnt be used, all due to waist high brambles and head high bracken! Then two months later when I went back out to tag the control sites everything had died back and I started to worry that the longer courses were too easy. I know some people on the longer courses felt the last descent to the river and back up a bit unnecessary but this was deliberate in order to keep runners away from an area of crags, adits and mine shafts. The alternative was a couple of extra trips through the brambles that mark the transition from trees to open ground, and as these were all but impenetrable when I first checked the routes I chose to descend to the river.
Id like to thank David for his help and useful advice whilst planning and for helping put out controls. Id also like to thank everyone who helped collect in controls, and last but not least, I have to thank husband Gary for doing all the IT stuff, helping with tagging, putting out and collecting controls and therefore forfeiting a league score.

Controllers Comments
Firstly, thank you all for coming along to the event - without you, the competitors, our efforts are useless! The two seemingly pointless controls on the Blue and Brown courses, as experienced competitors will realise, were put in for the good reason of safety. We lose a number of younger competitors when they move out of the area but we have not yet lost one because he (or she) fell over a nasty crag!
At this event I was lucky for several reasons: the weather could not have been better, and it was a very pleasant experience working with an attractive and capable young lady. The very few suggestions I made about the courses were considered and after a brief and well informed discussion were mostly acted upon; the comments from competitors were useful feedback and were almost all positive. The couple of points about the mapping have been noted and will be acted on when the map is revised.
A thank you also to Gary Ratcliffe for all the hard work he put in behind the scenes.
The "dreaded" wild boar, fortunately did not put in an appearance although, according to a local lady dog-walker, there are thought to be at least three in the area, one of which has piglets. Gary thought he heard them on Saturday whilst putting out flags and boxes. He was unable to see anything of them though as they were in a scrub filled ravine.
Long may you run in sunlit forests.

Organisers Comments
As usual I derived much pleasure from organising this local event, and I am most grateful for the support I received from all those whom I asked to help. Paul Sturtridge and Paul Adams directed the cars in such a manner as to make a most pleasing assembly area. Peter Boon, Stuart Robertson and Anthony Dew were on hand in case anyone needed first aid. Alan Simpson and Lew Bean controlled the SI registration and results system. Ann Hughes, Nicole Evans and Vivienne & Nicholas Maxwell dealt with all the clerical duties of registration. Mike Hughes and Ella Bowles controlled the start. Pete Whitfield and family set up the string course and were relieved by Lynda Robertson and her family. Peter Flick was there as usual looking after car keys and providing friendly advice. And, at the end, Ella Bowles, Anthony Dew and Graham Dugdale helped Lesley and Gary bring in all the controls. Almost all of the above, I am glad to record, also had competitive runs.
Finally my thanks to Lesley for planning and to Dave for controlling a very successful day.
I have two proposals for future events:
- registration forms should be completed fully before data are entered in the computer. Age class and club do appear in the results on the club website, but they are not readily available to the organiser when preparing the accounts.
- the registration form should contain a box in which to record the entry fee paid. This will aid identification of non-BOF runners, and simplify preparation of the accounts.
