Devon League - Whitchurch Common 10 Dec 06 - Results
Organiser's Comments
After very pleasant weather on Saturday, the
forecasters were predicting something more challenging on Sunday,
and they were not mistaken. Fortunately the tent stood up, as did
a committed team of helpers. My thanks go to Ann Hughes,
registration, Graham Dugdale, IT, Mark Bagley, parking, Vivienne
and Nicholas Maxwell on the start, and Peter Flick on enquiries.
60 seniors and 22 juniors braved the elements.
Most returned exhilarated, though one lady muttered something
about questioning her own sanity! Pride of place goes to the
Torbay 20th Scout Group, who keep turning out in force. They have
now purchased ten dibbers, and some boys ran two courses despite
the conditions.
Our new Sportident electronic punching kit has worked flawlessly for 12 months. Unfortunately we had the first case of malfunction yesterday. Control 69 was not responding reliably to dibbers. Fortunately Steve Rose the planner had a spare box in his pocket, number 59, and substituted the faulty control. This did cause concern to a number of competitors, but kept the show on the road.

Planner's Comments
Despite its
size Whitchurch Common hosts some intriguing technical areas.
Whilst the majority of the running is open and the ground
uncluttered, there are some areas which do cause the runner to
slow right down, and these are mainly due to the gorse and the
wet ground in the north and central area.
I wanted the
senior courses to take advantage of all these variations in the
terrain as much as possible, and I hope that I achieved my aim.
Control 69
didnt want to play when it was checked in the morning and
was swapped. The control stake was the same and had the control
code for the site plainly visible. I believe that runners should
take the stake number as the site control code and not the dibber
box, as this could change if it has a fault.
The junior
courses, as usual are the hardest and more challenging ones to
plan. The yellow course had to have a taped route due in part to
the myriad of paths that exist around Pew Tor. Even running one
way down a path, to check a control, turn round and run back
proved that you never go over the same ground twice!
Judging by
the smiling faces and good comments received at the download
area, everyone enjoyed their runs, despite the horrendous
weather.

I must thank
Roger Green for being my Picover and OCAD mentor and sorting out
the problems I had with the scale of the map. Without his help
you may not have had a pre printed map. Thanks also to Lew Bean
for controlling, putting out and collecting controls and to Alan
Simpson and the rest of the team for putting on another high
class event, which is becoming the
See you at
Brimpt's Farm in a fortnight!
Merry
Christmas everyone.

Controller's Comments
I thought the event went very well. I had a few qualms about the currency of the map with its proliferation of unmarked paths etc. It is an early 90s map, based on a 1991 photogrametric plot. However, the big boys on the Brown managed around 6 minute kms, and on the Blue 8 mins, despite the attrocious conditions, so there can't have been too much confusion out there. Fortunately Steve picked up the fault with 69 as he was putting the box out. In retrospect we should have done something to change or obscure the number on the substituted box, but in the relative warmth of the tent we considered that the feature could not be confused and the code on the stake was clear. Besides, it was drier in the tent! In future it would be advisable to not only carry spare boxes when putting out controls, but also some tape and a waterproof pen.
Thank you all for coming.
