Comments This event was a bit of an
experiment. Quite a few things went wrong for
which we apologise however here are the results
for what they are worth, which is not much, as
several controls were slightly out of position
and some competitors spent more time looking for
them than others. Mp in these
results means I went to the site but could
not find it within a reasonably short time!
The controls
were all put out on Saturday morning which didnt
leave any time for cross checking. There were
three persons putting out controls in various
groups. Unfortunately control 175 was not put out
at all! Control 158 was vandalised and the
kite and red and white tape were removed. The
control was probably in the wrong place by about
20 m and so nobody found the SI box. You would
have probably found it if the kite had been
visible. These controls have been deleted from
the courses and the results revised. The results
do not reflect the time wasted looking for
missing controls as some competitors will search
for longer than others depending on how
determined they are.
Next time we
will organise thing a bit differently:
- Put
out the controls the previous day to
allow adequate time for checking.
- All
sites to be tagged with tags left in
position on the day so that it will be
easier to see if the control is missing.
The next
event will probably be a score event which will
get round various legal problems with racing on
Public Bridleways and Footpaths.
On the
positive side the weather was, contrary to
forecasts, quite pleasant and I hope most of you
enjoyed a ride about the common and took in some
of the interesting views of the surrounding hills
and the sea.
The Foot O
Event went smoothly enough but the going was a
bit arduous and the map is getting a bit out of
date. For Foot O, the rough terrain precludes its
use for large prestigious events, which would be
needed to recover the cost of a major remapping
of the Common. For Mountain Biking it is pretty
good.
Thanks go to
Nigel Benham for planning the bike courses, my
wife Jill for planning the Foot O courses and
Dave Livsey for helping to put out controls early
on Saturday.
Also to Phil
Way and Donna Timmis for letting us use Mud
and Sweats SportIdent equipment. Mud
and Sweat organise mountain bike
orienteering events on a commercial basis

Planner's Comments
Woodbury
common was always going to be a great place for a
MTBO event and after the event I have not changed
my mind, despite the various problems at the
event. With so many bridleways and footpaths it
can become a planners nightmare, but I persevered
and eventually came up with some courses which I
felt worked.
This is the
first time I have planned in such a public area
and hadnt appreciated the constraints that
this can bring and also the time it can take to
put even one control out. Despite the problems I
hope you can see the enjoyment of MTBO and
willing to give biking another go. With Woodbury
being virtually unusable to foot-o, it makes a
lot of sense to utilise the maps for another use.
