Tamar Triple 2008

Late May Bank Holiday Saturday 24th to Monday 26th May 2008

The three days have been planned to be attractive to all orienteers and all are Regional (Badge) Events, so counting for Ranking Points. There will be a full range of courses in line with the recommendations for a small badge event, which will cover all age classes less M/W21N (See the Descriptions page for a full list of combinations). Colour Coded White, Yellow, Orange and Light Green will be offered as EOD each day, along with a String course.

Day One is a “Medium race” with estimated winning times in the range 20-30 minutes, about 50% of classic event times. The venue is Inny Foot, a privately owned mixed forest where the River Inny joins the mighty Tamar. The forest is approximately 5 miles South of Launceston. The Planner is Peter Morton of KERNO, who planned Day 1 for TT06. The Controller is Mark Dyer of BOK.

You will be allocated your start time for Day 1 on arrival and when you are ready. We are conscious that in previous years participants have experienced delays in the May Bank Holiday traffic on the M5 around Bristol. What we do not want is you rushing to get to Cornwall for a particular start time – we’ll accommodate your arrival as best we can. Registration and Start Times will be from midday.

Day Two is a Classic Regional Event. The venue is Plym Forest, on the outskirts of Plymouth, and visited for TT04. The area is mixed forest straddling the River Plym, and is managed by the Forestry Commission. The Plym flows in a steep sided valley down the West side of the map, with a steep sided tributary flowing in from the East. There is a good track network. The Planner is Alan Simpson of Devon OC, controlled by David Holmes of QO.

Day Three is also a Classic Regional Event, and is close to Plymouth. It takes place on a map combining two areas, Newnham Park and Smallhanger Waste. Newnham is a mixed forest, with a small plateau area falling away steeply to the Tory Brook. Smallhanger is rough open moorland to the East of Newnham, partially covered with large clumps of gorse and running uphill to the clay workings in the North of the map. Running down the centre of the area is Wheal Florence, a complex area of tinning works. The Planner is Nigel Bateman of Devon OC, controlled by SWOA Chairman Roger Hargreaves of KERNO
